Job Description

The Aquatics Captain is a pivotal leadership role responsible for driving the delivery and growth of high-quality swim lessons, squad and aquatic programs. They will ensure an exceptional customer experience through clear communication with parents and guardians, while maintaining safe, compliant, and well-presented aquatic facilities in accordance with industry and legislative standards. 

As an integral member of the leadership team, the Aquatics Program Captain will work across all locations to maximise community asset utilisation and contribute to the achievement of council plans, 

They will lead, mentor, and support, the swim school team of teachers and supervisors, ensuring consistent, high standard program delivery. 

A key focus of this role is program growth, student retention, and participation, actively promoting engagement within the Bass Coast Community and supporting initiatives to expand the number of residents regularly participating in aquatic programs. The Aquatics Program Captain will also provide timely and insightful weekly and monthly reporting to guide continuous improvement, operational planning, and strategic decision-making.

Key Responsibilities: 

 

  1. Program Leadership 

  • Lead the day-to-day delivery of the Learn to Swim and recreational aquatic programs across the centre(s). 

  • Ensure teaching quality, program consistency and an exceptional experience are maintained at all times. 

  • Support the Leisure Manager and/or Head of Facilities & Safety with implementation of program strategies, operational improvements and seasonal planning. 

  • Provide feedback and insights to management on program trends, customer needs, staff capability and operational risks. 

  • Assist in the rollout of new initiatives, curriculum, and teaching standards developed at management level. 

  • Delivery of high-quality lessons and programs that maximise student engagement and occupancy. 

  • Implement a customer centric culture where students enjoy their lessons, are rewarded and parents/guardians are well informed. 

  • Support the implementation of membership campaigns in collaboration with the Head of Customer & Commercial. 

  • Provide clear and accurate program information across all communication channels. 

  • Alongside the Head of Facilities & Safety effectively program the aquatic space to cater to the needs of the community. 

 

  1. Daily Operation of the Swim Program 

  • Provide visible leadership on the pool deck, actively supporting swim teachers through mentoring and guidance. 

  • Maintain the integrity of the swim school database and lesson bookings, maximising class occupancy. 

  • Ensure the program space is set up appropriately for all lessons. 

  • Ensure all lessons start and end on time to ensure smooth operations. 

  • Liaise with Duty Captains on maintenance or facility issues affecting program delivery. 

  • Complete and sign off operational checklists, reports and procedures. 

  • Escalate any issues relating to water quality, asset condition or facility safety to Duty Captain and/or the Head of Facilities & Safety. 

 

  1. Member Acquisition and Retention  

  • Actively engage parents and students to drive high levels of satisfaction and retention. 

  • Ensure students receive consistent feedback and are assessed according to progression criteria. 

  • Manage student movements, progressions and class changes effectively. 

  • Provide on-the-spot customer resolutions within delegated authority. 

  • Ensure complaints are followed up promptly and professionally. 

  • Actively seek feedback to identify opportunities for program improvement. 

  • Prepare weekly reports on lesson attendance, program occupancy, staff performance, and emerging risks. 

  • Contribute to end-of-month reports covering participation, program trends, financials, and recommendations for improvements. 

  • Be the face of all Learn to swim programs information. 

 

  1. Staff Support and Lesson Quality 

  • Assist with onboarding, induction and mentoring of new staff as delegated by the Leisure Manager. 

  • Provide feedback on teaching quality, consistency and safety practices. 

  • Ensure lesson content is delivered in line with approved curricula and standards. 

  • Coordination and delivery of programs in accordance with annual plans. 

  • Provide regular information for the pool communication channels 

  • Work collaboratively with the Leisure Manager, Head of Facilities & Safety, Duty Captains and Customer Experience teams to deliver a high-quality program. 

  • Communicate operational issues, risks, and customer trends to management promptly. 

  • Support centre-wide initiatives and cross-team cooperation. 

 

  1. Safety and Operational Compliance  

  • Monitor safe behaviour on pool deck and ensure staff follow centre policies and supervision requirements. 

  • Complete operational documentation including incident reports, hazard notifications and safety checklists. 

  • Identify risks and escalate as required to Duty Captain or management. 

  • Support the implementation of safety initiatives developed by the Head of Facilities & Safety.

The Aquatics Captain will also undertake regular direct service shifts and must be available to work a mixture of early morning, daytime, evening and weekend shifts. They may from time to time be required to undertake other tasks as directed by the Leisure Manager.   

Desired Skills and Experience

Essential qualifications and experience: 

  • Experience in swim school and/or other fitness-based programs management 

  • AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety (preferred but not essential) 

  • The position will be subject to relevant pre-employment checks such as a Police Check and must maintain a current working with children check 

  • The successful applicant must hold or be willing to attain First Aid and CPR qualifications, Lifeguard and RLSSA Pool Operations
