Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE:
The VFL Doctor plays a critical role in safeguarding player health, ensuring medical excellence within the Club’s VFL program. The VFL Doctor is responsible for medical decision-making regarding player fitness, injury management, and return-to-play readiness in accordance with AFL and Club protocols. The VFL Doctor ensures clear communication, consistency, and high-quality medical care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Lead all VFL medical decision-making and player health management: Determine fitness to train/play, manage injuries and illness, oversee concussion and anti-doping compliance, conduct screenings and exit medicals, uphold ethical and privacy standards, and provide after-hours follow-up when required.
2. Deliver medical coverage across all VFL training sessions and games: Attend required preseason and in-season training, match simulations, home/away games and finals; perform pre-match preparation and post-match triage; support rehabilitation programs; and ensure emergency readiness. 3. Coordinate VFL medical investigations, documentation, and reporting: Arrange imaging and specialist reviews, maintain accurate medical records (e.g., Gentu), manage AFL-mandated documentation, and provide timely reports to coaching and performance staff. 4. Collaborate with multidisciplinary staff and external specialists: Work closely with allied health, fitness, coaching staff and surgeons; participate in regular health and performance meetings; and support ongoing education across the medical and performance teams. 5. Maintain compliance, governance, and medical department operations: Uphold AHPRA registration, insurance, and AFL/WADA/ASADA requirements; monitor safety and environmental conditions; oversee medical equipment and inventory; and support the VFL Program's administrative and operational needs.
Desired Skills and Experience
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
1. Sport Physician (or actively working toward entry into the training program) with appropriate undergraduate and postgraduate medical qualifications, current AHPRA registration, and required professional indemnity and liability insurance.
2. Demonstrated experience delivering medical care to athletes within an elite or high-performance sports medicine environment.
3. Strong understanding of the AFL environment, including AFL policies and procedures (e.g., Concussion Management Guidelines) and AFL/WADA anti-doping policies.
4. Able to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team to optimise athlete health, performance, and return-to-play outcomes.
5. Demonstrates integrity, discretion, sound clinical judgment, and clear communication that builds trust with athletes and staff.
6. Performs well under pressure and adapts quickly to the fast-changing demands of elite sport while maintaining a strong athlete-centred approach.
